Over the Moon …

Thursday 9th August 2012

I was asked by Ben – from Huw Evans Picture Agency – to cover a shift in North Wales for them. Former Welsh Rugby International Rupert Moon was being announced as the new general manager of Rygbi Gogledd Cymru (RGC 1404) at the Eirias Park training facility in Colwyn Bay.

Following the official press conference Ben wanted some images that could be used for PR & publicity and for press syndication.

By chance that very morning (I’d travelled up the night before as trips to North Wales can be a long haul up the A470) I was working on the Llyn Peninsula and would be all done and completed by 12.00pm, just in time to head up the coast to Colwyn Bay in time for Rupert’s official launch. His role in the new post was greeted with universal acclaim all around  by the gathered media.

I’ve photographed Rupert before and he is one if the nicest people in sport … affable, fun to be around and very helpful. And so this proved once again, after his press conference we headed to a large indoor ‘field’ to start the shoot.

The indoor pitch.

The indoor pitch.

Armed with a large door matt and a rugby ball as props I captured Rupert beaming at stars … proud of his new job.

With limited ‘interesting’ locations to work with and the clock ticking I hoped to make something of the doormat as a prop.

Standing on a gantry above Rupert offered an opportunity to frame the picture within a clean space.

A 2nd set up was taken looking up at Rupert, taken using a wide angle lens to illustrate the location.

A quick edit of the images post shoot and a run of the final edit through Photoshop to adjust where needed, the images were sent via FTP to Huw’s offices Cardiff. Within 30 minutes after the shoot Ben had a good selection of pictures which were being syndicated to media across Wales and beyond.

My thanks to Ben for offering me the ‘additional’ shift and thus making my trip to North Wales a stellar experience all round!
